The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is a one-act musical that stages a spelling bee contest against a backdrop of drama. The musical includes nine primary characters: six spelling bee contestants, including last year’s champ, and three administrators, including a felon doing community service. Each has a distinct personality that contributes to the intrigue as the spelling bee unfolds. A small supporting cast also helps to keep the action interesting and move the story along.

Most parts require singing skills; there are solos as well as some ensemble singing

Male Spellers

The six spellers are divided evenly between boys and girls. William Barfee, who is called Barfee, was a runner-up in the previous year’s bee but was eliminated after a complication with a peanut allergy. When he spells a word, he first traces it out with his foot.

Leaf Coneybear has an innocent look. He wears handmade clothes, Birkenstock sandals and a gingham cape. During the bee, he stares into space, blows bubbles and plays with a puppet.

Chip Tolentino is the previous year’s champion. He wears a Boy Scout uniform.

Female Spellers

Olive Ostrovsky is quite shy and stands back from the microphone when she competes. Instead, she puts her hand in front of her face and spells the word into her hand. She is the runner up against Barfee.

Marcy Park wears a school uniform when she competes. Marcy is an overachiever and a confident competitor. She walks to the microphone with purpose and spells each word quickly and clearly.

Loggaine Schwartzandgrubenierre, who goes by Schwartzy, is the youngest speller. She talks with a lisp and is very interested in politics. She wears a button-up shirt with a tie and blazer, and she signs each word when she spells it.

The Administrators

Three people administer the spelling bee. Rona Lisa Peretti is the moderator of the bee and a former spelling bee champion herself. Now, she is middle aged and the top realtor in Putnam County.

Douglas Panch is the vice president who is filling in as a substitute to pronounce the words for the contestants. He is also middle aged and wears thick glasses. He fills in to try to get closer to Rona.

Finally, felon Mitch Mahoney acts as the “comfort counselor” as part of court-ordered community service. He wears several silver rings and necklaces. When contestants are eliminated, he gives them a juice box and a hug, but he never smiles.

Supporting Characters

Four audience members are asked to volunteer to participate as spelling bee contestants. No guidelines are set for what kind of audience members should be selected, so the experience can change for each performance of the musical. Other supporting characters include parents of the contestants. There is even an appearance by Jesus, who sings a musical number (typically, the same actor who plays Chip also plays Jesus).
